Why not join the Native Woodland Trust for a hands-on volunteering day this year. It is the perfect way to have fun and get some exercies in the great outdoors while making a difference for Irish conservation.

We organise a number of hands-on volunteering days on our native woodland reserves each year. The activities vary from tree planting to fence building to seed gathering. All activities are essential to our aim of establishing long lasting vibrant native woodland ecosystems at each of our woodland reserves.

Volunteering days are great for team building, practical learning and engaging with your environment - plus it's fun.

Hands-on Volunteering Day on Farnaght Oak Woodland:14 April, 11:00

Join the Native Woodland Trust on Saturday 14th April for a fun hands-on volunteering day on our Farnaght woodland reserve just outside Drumlish in the rolling landscape of the Longford Leitrim border. Our Farnaght reserve is taking shape nicely with acres of young oak and birch trees shooting up. Come and join us as we carry out the next step in developing this community woodland reserve with some essential maintenance on our young oaks that are now outgrowing their tree guards. Hands on volunteering days are the perfect way to have fun and get some exercise in the great outdoors while making a real difference for Irish conservation.

Our Farnaght Reserve has been planted with over 6000 trees in recent years. We have planted mostly birch and oak. The birch have shot up and are now well above head height allowing one to wander underneath where the forest floor is quickly developing, soon to be inhabited by woodland flowers. Over time the oaks will tower up above the birch creating a picturesque oak woodland complete with bluebells and bustling with Irish woodland creatures. “This woodland is for the enjoyment and use of the local community and our native wildlife and it will be passed on to our next generation as a valuable contribution to a country where native woodland is all to scare. For this important mission we need your help.”

On Saturday we will spend the day removing tree guards from our oaks, tiding the site and plotting out woodland paths. If you are interested in woodlands or conservation or would just like to get outdoors and have some fun then join us this Saturday. The event is being overseen by our reserve officer and all work will be carried out using hand-held tools and simple techniques. All ages are welcome!

Meeting point: Drumlish Village, Co Longford at the car park opposite cost cutters. 11:00 o’clock.

Booking is essential for this event. To book onto this volunteering day or for more details please contact Kieran at kieran.flood@nativewoodlandtrust.ie or on 087 1953629.

Laragh Hands-on Volunteering Day: 3rd March 11:00 - Join us for our first hands-on volunteering day of 2012. The perfect way to have fun and get some exercise in the great outdoors while helping make a difference for Irish conservation. Help us get stuck into some spring cleaning on our Laragh Woodland Reserve as we do some essential reserve management.

Our Laragh Reserve is situated high in the Wicklow Mountains on the edge of the National Park overlooking a picturesque valley. Using hand held tools and traditional techniques we shall spend a half day removing some encroaching gorse to keep important access paths clear for this years planting. We will of course take plenty of breaks stopping for tea (on us!) and some lunch while enjoying the spectacular views and fresh air of the Wicklow Mountains.

Meet at the Brockagh Centre car park, Laragh, Co. Wicklow at 11:00 on 3rd March
