Frequently Asked Questions

mosswood

Q. Is this not-for-profit?
A. YES! The Native Woodland Trust is a charitable organisation, recognised by the charities section of the revenue commissioners, number CHY 14035. All of our activities and revenue are used for the main aims of the Trust. Should the Trust ever cease to trade, all of our assets must be handed over to a similar organisation, which must also be a charity.

Q. Where does the Trust get the trees?
A. The Native Woodland Trust collects the seed for the trees exclusively from Ancient Woodlands, preferably within 10 miles of the site for the new woodland. The seed will then be grown to a suitable size for planting out.

Q. Who owns the land?
A. The land belongs to the Trust – this way we can be sure that the trees will be not be harvested - as could happen if the land is not in our control. The Native Woodland Trust is the only ENGO in Ireland purchasing its own land for trees.

Q. How do I know my tree was planted?
A. You will receive a certificate giving details of where your tree was planted and all of our woodlands will be independently audited to ensure that all sponsored trees are planted.

Q. Why should I sponsor a tree?
A. Ireland was once a completely wooded country. Now, only 0.1% of our woodlands remain, the lowest proportion in Europe and one of the lowest in the world. Despite this situation, not all of the remaining woodland is protected. The Native Woodland Trust is the only Irish NGO concentrating on this issue. By sponsoring a tree with us, you are helping not only to create new woodlands in Ireland from original Irish stock, but also contributing to our efforts to identify and protect our few remaining Ancient Woodlands, such as the one pictured below.
